Outdoor Headshots & Branding Sessions – Challenges and How I Overcome Them

Outdoor headshot and branding sessions can be absolutely stunning. Natural light, interesting backdrops, and a relaxed atmosphere all contribute to authentic, engaging images. But let’s be honest – shooting outdoors comes with its own set of challenges.

Wind blowing hair in every direction, overhead sun creating harsh shadows, unpredictable weather… these are just some of the hurdles a photographer has to navigate. The good news? With experience, preparation, and the right techniques, I know how to turn these challenges into opportunities.

The Wind Factor

There’s nothing worse than finally nailing the perfect expression – only to have a gust of wind blow hair across someone’s face.

Here’s what I do:

  • Choose locations with natural shelter (buildings, walls, or trees) to block the wind.
  • Time the shoot for calmer parts of the day when possible.
  • Guide clients on hairstyle and wardrobe choices that work best outdoors.
  • Keep a comb and hair spray handy for quick touch-ups.

Instead of battling the wind, sometimes I even use it creatively for a natural, dynamic look.

Overhead Sun = Harsh Shadows

The midday sun is every outdoor photographer’s challenge – it casts unflattering shadows and makes clients squint.

To solve this, I:

  • Schedule sessions during the “golden hours” (early morning or late afternoon) when the light is soft and flattering.
  • Use reflectors or diffusers to balance harsh light and even out shadows.
  • Position clients in open shade (under awnings, trees, or building edges) for smooth, consistent lighting.

The result? Beautifully lit portraits that feel natural, approachable, and professional.

Flexibility Is Key

The biggest difference between outdoor and studio headshots is control. In the studio, I control every light. Outdoors, I control how I adapt. That’s why I always bring backup equipment – from portable strobes to reflectors – and scout multiple location options.

This means that no matter what Mother Nature throws at us, I can still create headshots and branding photos that highlight your personality and professionalism.

Why Choose an Outdoor Session?

Despite the challenges, outdoor sessions offer:

  • Unique backgrounds that stand out from traditional studio shots.
  • A relaxed, approachable feel that’s perfect for personal branding.
  • The ability to capture variety – headshots, lifestyle images, and candid branding moments all in one session.
